How to get Garage Door Tax Credit 2009 - 2010
Be aware that some new garage doors qualify for a 30% garage door tax credit. This energy efficiency tax credit is available for improvements made to your "principal residence" that you own and live in the majority of the year. Temporary absence due to illness, vacation, military service, or eduation, do not change your principal residence status.
Your residence includes a house, mobile or manufactured home, cooperative apartment, condominium, and oddly enough - even a House Boat. I've yet to see a houseboat with a garage, but now my mind is now stirring! Also, the residence must be located in the United States.
Timing:
The Tax Credit in effect for tax years 2009 and 2010 and your garage door must be installed between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010. So hurry up and get your 30% tax credit.
Details:
The garage door must have a Solar Heat Gain Coefficientand U-factor of less than or equal to 0.30. The U-Factor is a measure of heat transfer through a window and tells you how well the product insulates. A lower U-Factor = better insulation value and generally range from 0.25 to 1.25. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient refers to the solar heat the window transfers.
Your garage must be insulated, however, it is not required that it be attached. An insulated garage has insulated outside walls and attic.
You must have the Manufacturer's Certification Statement.
ENERGY STAR does not label garage doors. I do not advise to insulate an existing garage making it part of the "conditioned space" of your home if you keep cars, paints, chemicals, or fuel in the garage. The fumes from these sources could leak into your house if part of the "conditioned space." In this case, it is suggested to insulate the wall between the house and garage to seal out garage fumes.
Products "placed in service" in 2009, file Form 5695a and submit it with your 2009 taxes (by April 15, 2010). On the 2009 1040 form, the residential energy tax credit (from Form 5695) is claimed on line 52. Products "placed in service" in 2010, take the tax credit on your 2010 income taxes. Save your receipts and the Manufacturer's Certification Statement for your records.
