Garage Floor Tile Options
There are now many options when it comes to Garage Floor Tiles . Garage Floor Tiles are so easy to install, my 7 year old helped me with my garage. You can create custom patterns with a variety of colors to personalize your garage to your tastes. Whether you are a Harley, Chevy, or Ford Fanatic, the available color palette is sure to fit your needs.
In 1999 when I first started in the garage detailing business, there were only a few garage tiles available. Garage Detailer was a RaceDeck Dealer for several years. I still have the original product in my garage that still draws comments from everyone who visits.
This photo shows RaceDeck that was unsnapped many times and displayed at over 15 Home Improvement and Automotive Shows; including Barrett-Jackson and the Good Guys Rod and Custom Shows. My garage floor has seen some serious traffic and still cleans up very nicely. I have found you can also replace a single piece if you damage one.
Although there are very few products I will endorse for the garage, I do recommend Garage Floor Tile for any garage that may have moisture seeping through the floor. (An easy test for garage floor for moisture here.) Tiles make a perfect floor system for previously coated floors that are now peeling and the transient home owner. When we recently moved, I simply unsnapped large sections the floor and loaded it on the moving van. Garage Floor Tiles and are truly portable flooring. It was a pleasure to move into my new home and customize my new garage without any further expense.
A few caveats to most garage floor tile systems
1) The tiles are usually constructed of Polypropylene or a polymer substance that may expand and contract with temperature variations. Be sure to leave a ¼ to ½” expansion gap around the edges. Heavy work benches or tool boxes may prevent the expansion in extreme weather and the floor may buckle even with and expansion gap. Dark colors in direct sunlight are more susceptible.
2) In salty environments, I have found rust may permanently stain the surface.
3) Oil spills can be very slippery.
4) Water beneath the tile can create mold or mildew.
How do you clean garage floor tile?
I usually blow out my garage with a leaf blower and then use a mild detergent and damp mop. This method cleans fairly well for most minor dirt and dust. My extreme cleaning method involves an aggressive degreaser and a stiff brooming and then hosing or power washing the garage tile surface (Please note: the extreme method may seep moisture below the tile thus creating mildew, mold, or worse.) I usually just slide the flooring out in the driveway for the extreme cleaning and slide it back in after it dries.
