Organize your Garage!

Never leave your car out in the cold again

organize your garage to accommodate your car and your garage stuff. Garage storage solutions are available to fit your lifestyle and help you gain control of the clutter. Are you ready to transform your garage with organized storage? Then let's get busy!>

I believe there is no single solution to garage storage. Your garage is probably loaded with everything from the tiniest screw, up to large bulky items like coolers, bikes, and a wheelbarrow-- Not to mention your great tool collection! It's amazing how much stuff we squirrel away in the garage. Take a look in the garage to determine your unique garage storage requirements. Some items are rarely used such as seasonal Christmas decorations, while other items are frequently used like a worn-out shovel. Whether small or large, seldom or often used, a place to call home needs to be found for every item. Your storage requirements will undoubtably use several different storage solutions listed on our site.

The first step to determining your storage requirements is to clean the garage. Now this will be a painful process, especially for you pack rat types. This is the time to dispose of items you have not used in the past year or two. You can almost always beg, borrow, or buy a new one if the need ever arises. What works for me is to donate the items to your friends and neighbors, then you know who has one if you ever need to borrow it. Personally, if I have not used or specifically looked for an item in the past year, it is added to the disposal list. Try to get rid of as much as possible. If you have hazardous items such as old paints, chemicals, or batteries, check with your city if they offer a disposal program.

When cleaning the garage, you should remove everything and lay it out in the open driveway. Group the items that belong together and further sort by how often you use them. You will want the items you most frequently use to be in a handy location while other items can be stored up high or in the attic.

A few garage storage tips:

Often we may purchase items without thinking of their storage requirement. I almost purchased my wife a herd of grazing reindeer at an after Christmas sale. Standing in the checkout line, it dawned on me that these big boxes would be stored in the garage until......forever. I'm glad my wife wasn't with me, because Christmas is her favorite holiday and she is determined to top my Halloween display! Be careful not to purchase too many items you can live without.

Purchase clear storage bins to fit perfectly in your cabinets. There are a variety available, so just don't buy the first ones you see at the local corner store. Make sure they are a good fit. Your cabinet space is very valuable and a proper fitting container will help maximize the space. Stacks and Stacks is a good place to find an assortment of bins and storage containers. I like their "Home Organizer Bin Warehouse" for and inexpensive solution to storing large bins.

Stackable, durable, clear 33 quart storage boxes with heavy duty snap down buckles to secure lids. Set of 2. From Iris.

Once you have your bins, sort and organize your garage belonging into them. When you open your cabinets, you will be able to quickly find what you are looking for. I sort and keep all my sprinkler parts in one container, electrical, plumbing, crafts, automotive parts and many other items in their own bins.
